Foolproof Wood Grain Tutorial by Sheelos-lover Foolproof Wood Grain Tutorial by Sheelos-lover
The same wood grains featured in my recent Winter Cicada coloration (p. 15). They're the easiest things in the world to do and you get a beautiful effect that looks somewhat natural.

Skills needed:
-Knowledge of the basic uses of some of the tools in Photoshop
-Scribbling skills
-Drawing somewhat (but not completely) straight lines up and down AND side to side.

Think you can handle this?

This tutorial was made for Photoshop Elements 4. If your tools are in different places, either know where they are or use the bar near the top of the box that says, "Type a question for help".

Enjoy!

You're very welcome! Even as my art style has grown and changed, this technique hasn't changed, though adding a little bit of extra highlight or shading in thin lines that go in the direction of the grain also helps to add depth if you have lots of time and want to draw attention to the wood. :)

It looks good!!! You might want to be a little more careful about the edges, though -- there was lots of white. Photoshop gets screwy like that.
